What is the Newmarket Business Association (NBA)
The Newmarket Business Association was incorporated in 1937, and joined the Auckland City Council’s Mainstreet structure in 1995. It has grown from a purely voluntary organisation to an economic structure with fulltime staffing and a budget of nearly $1 Million. There are more than 1500 members, all Newmarket businesses, to be found in the Newmarket town centre area between Balm Street in the South and Parnell Rd to the north, and bounded by the railway line to the east and Crowhurst St to the West.
Who is a member: you are a member of the association if you own, occupy or are a tenant of a commercially rated property within the separate rating area – refer to Newmarket Precinct Plan (July 1998) NBA is funded through the Auckland City Council, by an incremental Mainstreet rate on the commercial properties within our boundaries (see map).
If you pay rates to Auckland City Council, you will notice on the rates demand the “Newmarket Separate Rate”. The Separate Rate is collected by Auckland City and passed to the Newmarket Business Association via quarterly grants. This is a fair and equitable method of providing funds for the Newmarket Business Association to represent all Newmarket businesses.
If you are a member please contact lea@newmarket.net.nz to obtain your password so that you can access the member’s only section of this website.
What is a mainstreet programme?
Mainstreet programmes, which operate throughout New Zealand, are based on a partnership between local government, the business community and the community at large. They are based on incremental success and community involvement.
These programmes are not "quick fix" solutions. Basic objectives of the programme, under Mainstreet guidelines, are an enhanced physical environment, heritage conservation, business creation and development and increased employment and local business investment. In addition to being business development programmes they also involve community and cultural development. The programme is intended to identify and reinforce the unique identity of a place and to promote that identity as part of its development to benefit us all.
An executive committee comprised of elected business people and representatives from Hobson Committee Board and Auckland City Council, ensures Newmarket’s Mainstreet programme operates efficiently and works towards meeting its objectives.
Associate Membership
A person who does not qualify to be a full member may become an Associate Member of the association by applying to the Manager to do so. The manager shall advise the Mainstreet executive committee of the application and the Newmarket mainstreet executive committee shall determine whether or not the applicant shall be admitted. Membership Benefits
The association is the voice of Newmarket and is a great advocate for those wanting some strong representation. Being a member or associate member gives organisations a greater foot into the community. For instance, members and associate members know what’s going on around Newmarket through our newsletters and are encouraged to attend our popular monthly networking functions.
Another important revenue stream comes from hiring out our cross-street banner sites on Broadway. These banners are hugely popular and are very effective for advertisers with 40,000 cars passing underneath them every day. These banners can only be booked by both members and associate members and is another great benefit of being part of the Newmarket Business Association.
The Newmarket Business Association aims to be able to provide Newmarket businesses with information on what’s happening in our area. At various times of the year having access to research such as the monthly Retail Trade Survey, Pedestrian Counts and information on Retailers Spend.
